Flat Boy Burgers - Review

Burger of the Year

Flat Boy Burgers may have taken the crown for the best burger in Edmonton. It’s a no-fuss burger joint operating out of a curling rink that is such an iconic Alberta vibe. I feel like I’ve made multiple jokes about burger spots having the quality of a farm town rink. Frozen patties cooked to shit. Here at Flat Boy it is not the case at all. They’re providing an authentic smash burger here and I’m all for it. It’s amazing. The whole premise of smash burger is to increase the surface area, thus increasing the Maillard reaction. This reaction is present on any browning of food from marshmallows to steaks and is why a visit to Flat Boy Burgers is in order.

When we first arrived at the Granite Curling Club it felt like a blast into the past. A very dated yet well-maintained curling club just north of Whyte Ave. You’re greeted with a boot cleaner, the sounds of curlers, and the smell of sweet, sweet burgers.

I had ordered the Double Flattie that included two 3-ounce fresh Alberta grass-fed beef patties smashed to perfection. It’s topped with American cheese, lettuce, onion, tomato, bread, and butter pickle chips, and Flat Sauce. All of these are squeezed between a freshly buttered and toasted roll. This thing is pure deliciousness. The texture of the char and the salt and fat just dance in your mouth. This burger was perfection. I’m tempted to get 3 patties next time, I just want more of this meat in my mouth. Pause.

Let’s not forget the fries as I wasn’t really going to order any but wow it was dope also. These Flat Fries are homemade and double cooked and for $5 it’s worth sharing. I kept picking at them during my dinner, just a great fry.

Lastly, for dessert, I ordered the Key Lime Pie. It’s also homemade and wow, it’s fucking surprising how refreshing this tastes. The crust is so sexy, just crumbles nicely and tastes bomb. I’m now wondering how much an entire pie costs to take home.

I’m over the moon with this place. Quite possibly the best new place to eat in Edmonton in the past year. I haven’t been too hyped about going anywhere new but wow am I glad I went here. The small menu really allows them to focus on one thing and make it delicious. I love it.

I can tell that this place will be massively popular and won’t stay in its cute and unique spot at the Granite Curling Club. This is sad but I highly suggest dining in and just enjoying the truly Canadian sport of curling. It’s extremely relaxing to watch and paired with a few burgers and Mexican Coca Colas and you can’t go wrong. There’s a full-fledged bar/lounge upstairs for alcohol, so this has got to be one of the most chill spots to drink.

Flat Boy Burgers is a must-eat in Edmonton.

Sal says: Just Eat it (4.1/5)

Jesse says: I would say the burgers were delicious. More fries than you could eat. Add the Mexico import Coca-Cola and top if off with curling. Plus rad dudes working there making it happen. 100 percent would go again.
