Bubba Gump Shrimp Company - Review

Why does this place exist?

Every time I’ve gone to a movie at WEM I always think…what can I eat before the movie? For the longest time, I’ve considered, based solely on location but would never go to Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. It looked like a more Americanized Red Lobster with all the decorations from the 1990s movie Forrest Gump all over the walls. They even have a store for merch. I’ve never seen or heard anyone talk of Forrest Gump and I still wonder how this restaurant is even relevant. Yet alone relevant enough to spend even a year in WEM. These rent prices are steep!

Anyways I bit the bullet and decided to go to Bubba Gump and I was so disappointed. I had started with the Old Fashioned New England Clam Chowder. Basically just watered-down Chunky soup, I prefer Chunky soup instead.

For my main, I ordered the Bourbon St. Fish and Shrimp Combo. This had Cajun spiced haddock, grilled shrimp, Bourbon sauce, green onions, tomatoes and mashed potatoes. I’d have to say, this may have been one of the worst seafood dishes I’ve ever had. The haddock wasn’t seasoned well and tasted like the bland baked fish I’d make for meal prep. Covering the haddock in Bourbon sauce helped a bit but couldn’t mask how weak of a fish this was. There were also 4 grilled shrimp that had no seasoning whatsoever, just bland on all levels here. The mashed potatoes were the best thing tbh.

My friend had ordered Jenny’s Surf and Surf which had flame-grilled salmon, grilled shrimp, herb butter, lobster butter sauce, steamed rice and broccoli. This was also a very bland and unfun dish. $29 for this dish is just way too much.

The service here was almost non-existent, Looking around for anyone to help with a refill was difficult. Overall this place is such a dud. I can’t believe it’s been open for however long it’s been here. The rent can’t be cheap. Is it possible to be an establishment way worse than Red Lobster? Yes! It’s here at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company.

Sal Says: Just Skip It (0.3/5)

Mike says: Overpriced, no flavour, easily the worst seafood I’ve had in landlocked Edmonton
