The Ark Cafe- Review

Northside Cafe surprise

I was convinced to make a trip Northside to meet my friend’s new baby and also try out a cafe I haven’t gone to, The Ark Cafe.

Looking at the menu there was definitely a sense of diversity in the food. There were sandwiches that seemed like they were from Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines. I say this as what we ordered was the Spammich, a sandwich that had…you guessed it, Spam. There was a curry beef bun that was deep fried that reminded me of a Japanese treat. The empanada reminded me of something my family would buy. A nice warm pocket of meat. Delicious. My favortie sandwich here was the Chopped cheese. A bodega favorite from NYC, just biting into this juicy sandwich made me feel like Spiderman. The bread was soft, with juicy ground beef, onions, tomatoes and lettuce. Chef’s kiss.

Speaking of the chef, he was very receptive when giving some insights on how he could improve the spammich. It’s already a great sandwich but with some tweaks I think it could be top 10 sandwich contender. Also…who hates spam? It’s been an ongoing debate at work.

The lattes here were also delicious. The one that stood out for me was the Ube Latte where it wasn’t too sweet but a nice subtle flavor of ube. Having this been my first ube latte, it was delicious and I’d probably go back just for it.

Ark Cafe is a small and bright spot that has walls and tables covered in a hand-drawn black and white cartoon style. This is courtesy of the owner’s daughter who is a talented artist. The service was great, the ambiance is cute which makes this a perfect spot for a quick lunch or unique sandwiches and lattes.
