The Other Place by La Patrona - Review

Major disappointment

Seeing as my buddy returned from Toronto to live back in yeg, I had to take him somewhere great. The reputation of eating well was on the line, and as it would so happen, La Patrona opened a new spot called The Other Place. We were excited much like 2 kids on Christmas morning. How could the best Mexican restaurant produce anything terrible? Well it did.

Our attitudes soured right off the start when it took maybe 15 minutes for a cocktail. 2 mojitos with mix probably sourced from Dollarama, it’s passable at a frat party, but not really at a spot charging over $10 for it. These cocktails didn’t pair well with the cochinita pizza we decided to split on. Thi pizza had little to minimal flavor except for the taste of salt. There’s a lot of that on there. Charging $21 dollars for a Love Pizza I can get for $14 is terrible considering the little league quality of this pizza.

On the topic of salt, the Chorizo Burger my buddy got was absolutely filled with it. I’ve had some great chorizo tortas and they did not reach the level of salt that this burger had. Burger was topped with cheese, lettuce, tomato, and TOP onions which didn’t add much to the complexity of this burger. Best part of the dish was the fries and gravy.

Now my main course was an absolute disaster of a dish. Considering this place is a “fusion restaurant” i’d never thought it would be suadero on top of a big fucking potato. Paps locas was a baked potato with sauteed mushrooms, TOP onions, poblano peppers, red peppers and finished with cheese mix, sour cream and green onions. I honestly only ate the toppings as the potato was so massive and dry and gross. Just not worth $21 dollars for a lazy dish like this. The ratios are off, you need enough toppings to effectively be tasty with the entire potato. There was just not enough of that happening here. Definitely need a trip to Wendy’s to take some notes.

Service here was pretty lazy, really needed some staff that cared about the place. Despite this being a new spot I have hope for it. This is a fusion restaurant, how about a chorizo bao bun, or some kind of sushi roll with ceviche in it I don’t fucking know. Just not a fuckign potato.

Sal says: Just Skip It (1.3/5)

Joe says: Lol. I definitely hyped it up in my head cause of how good la Patrona is. But disappointed. Also chorizo burger on the saltier side of things. We should have known better when she said the club sandwich was their most popular item
