Travel Food Tuesday - Ramen Tatsu-ya

Worth the flight

Dreaming of travel until I head to Vancouver next month, and remembered how lit Austin was earlier this year. And quite possibly one of the best ramen I’ve had outside of Japan. Legit though we came here twice on our trip and had no ragrets.

When we visited we were greeted by a huge fortune cat with a mask on. Nice touch. We had to wait in this red room where we were then escorted to the outdoor patio which had nice touches to resemble a Japanese alley. It loosely reminded me of the back alleys of Sapporo where I first had butter in my ramen for the first time. It’s also the first time I received type 2 diabetes.

The dishes we ordered came out pretty fast and had KOROKKAAAYYY which was a Japanese corquette with panko, potato, chashu and house katsu sauce. Chef’s kiss. Munchie Katsu Slider was also ridiculously good. It was on a soft Hawaiian roll, panko beef patty with the house katsu sauce. I love good bread on any sandwich/burger. This was no exception. Our last side was the Sweet & Sour Yodas, which should’ve been called baby Yodas since tbh since they were so tiny and green. These were hit with apricot vinegar and some curry spice. Pretty standard brussel sprouts but the curry was a nice surprise.

The main dish for me was the tsukemen. I’ve been deprived of a great tsukemen since Japan and this one slapped. I was literally slapping my knee eating it. The dipping broth was condensed pork bone and my god was it delicious, rich in umami. I was in heaven. The bowl of noods had chashu, ajitama (seasoned egg), nori and lime. This dish was amazing.

On the second time coming through, I had the Tonkotsu Sho-Yu. Pork bone broth, soy sauce blend, chashu, ajitama, menma, scallion, nori, and pepper. Damn, this was some delicious broth and chashu. The menma (bamboo shoots) as well, I love the texture too much. Overall great flavor and great noodles as well if you like it on the thinner side.

The service was great and the ambiance was relaxed. This is a must-go in Austin.

David says: Tsukemen’s dipping broth was rich and full of flavor. Highly recommend.
